A rebreather can also be used for diving with trimix or heliox. The inspiration rebreather is CE approved for diving to 100 metres.
The advantages are obvious in regards to gas consumption; a CCR diver will use almost no gas in comparison to an open circuit diver. The price of helium is very high, and the CCR enables us to dive trimix as often as we like with no regards to economy.
We do bring open circuit bailout gas with us, in the event of a serious unit failure, but this gas is seldom used and can “survive” several trips before we refill them (typically when we decide to perform a bailout drill, to keep our skills sharp).
