Tsjeluskin Data

According to the original specifications from the Danish Burmeister & Wain's (B&W) shipyard The Tsjeluskin (ex Lena) was 100 metres long, 7.4 metres high (from hull to deck) and 16.5 metres wide. It was built in 1932 according to the Lloyd special classification, strengthened for ice, and fitted with two specially designed double compound steam engines also from B&W. It was actually the prototype of a complete series that was built for the Soviet Union. The tonnage was 3,607 tons netto. The dead weight was 4,500 ton with a maximum speed of 12.5 knots. It ship was built for 50 passengers/crew and described as both a freighter and passenger carrier. It was built in the finest quality for the price of 1,900,000 Danish Crowns and delivered with one year warranty. The Tsjeluskin was also equipped with a small collapsible airplane that was carried under the deck.

The airplane could be fitted with pontoons or skis according to the surrounding conditions. The plane was primarily used for mail and passenger transport to remote polar stations. Today the Tsjeluskin lies at 48 metres of water in The Arctic Ocean with minus 1 degree celsius all the way to the bottom. Take a look at the map.
