The
Tsjeluskin
(or Chelyuskin)
was a Russian steam driven
vessel,
strengthened for ice, built by the Danish B&W shipyard in 1932
for the Soviet Republic. In 1934 she was trapped in the Artic Ocean pack ice
leaving her crew of 105 men to survive on the floating ice for
two
months. Through out this drama only one guy was killed when he was trying to
salvage goods of The
Tsjeluskin during her final moment getting crushed by
the ice. The remaining 104 persons were all air lifted to safety by
three
small airplains
that had to fly several trips back and
forth in
impossible
conditions. Off cause the
pilots received medals for the heroic
mission. In all The
Tsjeluskin marks an exciting and
important piece of Russian
history, which is why an expedition was planned in
2004 in
order to commemorate the 70 year
anniversary of the dramatic incident. JJ-technique was hired to train some
of the expedition divers on Inspiration CCRs
and subsequently participate in the expedition as safety
consultants and camera
crew. Read the full story by clicking
