August 22st 2004
In the morning we all woke up early and gathered in the dive equipment room
and started disassembling the units for transport. At this point we just
wanted to get back to Denmark. On the way back to Anadyr we went to a remote
archeological site on the north coast of Chukotka to pick up a team of
archaeologists that had been working there for 1.5 months. However, this was
actually a bit of a surprise because we were kind of in a hurry to make it
to Anadyr on schedule. It became pretty clear that we had to confront the
expedition leader with our concerns about reaching our plain out of Anadyr
in time. Max tried to calm us down by saying this was no big deal, but when
he realised that we also knew how to read the sea chart and calculate the
ETA he confessed to the fact that we would not be able to reach our
connection out of Anadyr.
However, passing the Bering Strait
in daylight was an impressive experience, absolute breathtaking scenery
cleansing the mind for negative vibrations. With the help of Oleg, Alexander
and Max we managed to work out a solution to minimize our time loss. This
would bring us back to Denmark one day later than initially planned.
With the expedition were quit a bit of media people and they were all
thirsting for some kind of ending to the Tsjeluskin Expedition 2004. Finally
the expedition leader had to establish a small press conference in order to
satisfy the hungry press people. The message was clear, the expedition had
failed to find the Tsjeluskin but then again a failure is also a good reason
to start planning the next attempt. |
