August 16th 2004
The 16th of August we landed in Anadyr. Anadyr is a part of a
prohibited region in Russia, the state of Chukotka, close to the U.S. border
(Alaska) even Russians need special permissions to travel to this region.
There are no roads or railroads leading to Chukotka, the only ways into the
region are by airplane or boat. Even in the Chukotka region you have to fly
from town to town, there is only wetlands and tundra in between the
different towns.
The administration took five hours before we
could leave the airport. From
here we chartered a small pilot boat that would take us across the bay into
the city. In Anadyr we booked a nice hotel room and ordered some lunch.
Already on board the pilot boat we noticed that the wind was picking up,
creating 1.5 metre waves inside the sheltered bay presenting an ill warning
in regards to our future voyage into open sea.
This night we had to do some very troublesome planning due to changes in the
dive vessel’s transport time. Max had received a message from the captain of
the ship that we had to spend two days to get to the wreck and not one,
which actually meant that we had one and a half day of diving the Tsjeluskin
instead of three days as originally planned. At this point we were very
close to aborting the mission and return to Denmark, because the Russians
wanted to prolong the expedition and we were unable to fit it into our
schedule. |
